How to price a local service without guessing
Build a sustainable starting price by accounting for labor, materials, travel, overhead, fees, and the scope customers receive.

Calculate the real cost of the job
Start with the time spent doing the work, then include preparation, travel, cleanup, customer communication, and administration. Add materials, equipment wear, insurance, taxes, payment or marketplace fees, and other operating costs that apply to your business. A price that covers only visible labor can leave a busy business losing money.
- ✓On-site labor and preparation time
- ✓Travel and vehicle costs
- ✓Consumable materials and equipment
- ✓Overhead, taxes, and applicable platform fees
Define what the starting price buys
A starting price should correspond to a repeatable baseline job. Describe the size, condition, time, or deliverables included. Then identify common upgrades or conditions that require a revised quote. The goal is not to predict every situation; it is to give customers a reliable starting point.
- ✓The baseline scope
- ✓Expected duration
- ✓Materials included
- ✓Common add-ons or condition-based changes
Compare the market carefully
Competitor prices provide context, but they do not reveal another company’s costs, quality, scope, or availability. Compare similar offers and customer expectations, then make sure your own price supports the standard of work you promise.
Review price and results together
Track completed jobs rather than judging a price only by the number of inquiries. If most jobs take longer than expected, require frequent revisions, or leave little margin after costs and fees, adjust the baseline scope or starting price. Communicate changes clearly and never alter an already accepted quote without the customer’s approval.
- ✓Actual time per completed job
- ✓Materials and travel used
- ✓How often quotes need revision
- ✓Net amount remaining after costs and fees
